Cat Scratch Post Tutorial

How to make a Recycled Scratch Post!!

We love to spend a couple of chilled hours making creations from recycled materials, and even more so when they’re for our lovely animal-shaped friendlies.

You will need:
> 1 thick tubing (however high you would like your cat post). Mine is 50cm.
> Spray adhesive / any other strong glue.
> 2 medium balls of twine per 50cm tubing – I used rough garden twine.
> A square of 1” thick wood/MDF/plywood (if making a 50cm post use 50cm x 50cm square to ensure it doesn’t fall.)
> A soft furry ball that fits in the end of your post.
> Jigsaw/drill – something to cut the hole with.

Instructions:
1. Place your tube in the centre of the square of wood and draw around it, then cut out with your drill/ jigsaw.
2. Put your tube into the hole and mark where the twine should stop as it comes into contact with the wood.
3. Next get your twine, post and adhesive ready. Spray about 4 inches of adhesive to the pole, then begin to wrap your twine…. Keep wrapping….. and wrapping… adding more glue as you go, and making sure your twine doesn’t overlap or leave gaps. Stop when you reach the mark at the bottom of your tube.
4. Now spray the bottom of your tube and the inside of the ring on your board. Leave for 1 minute for extra tackiness, then push the tube into the hole.
5. Now push the ball into the top of the tube to finish it off. And you’re done!

Notes & Tips!
> If you want coloured twine, why not save your beetroot juice and leave your twine in it over night to soak. Et voilĂ ; purple twine!
> Remember to wear old clothes if using the spray adhesive (I learnt this the hard way!).
> I didn’t, but you could add scrap carpet to the base to match the post.
> I left the ball off the top of mine so I can eventually build a complete home for my kitten, with different levels and a cat house. You could even add a toy on a string or attach one of the cat toys on a bendy stick.
> If your cat is reluctant to use the cat scratch post, try rubbing it in lavender or cat nip to encourage them.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! As my kitten loves it!!
